When you live in the same house for decades, things can start to get boring. Everything around you looks like a big red sign that says “Update Your Home”!!! It’s not your fault, and it’s not your home’s fault either – sometimes you just need a change! But between funding all of the kids sports, the new car, and with the holidays coming up, it’s hard to find the money or the time for a full-blown remodel. Luckily, we’ve got a couple of easy renovations you can make to your home that cost way less than a remodel, and will save you a ton of time.

#1 Paint Kitchen Cabinets

If your kitchen is looking a little outdated, one of the fastest ways to give it a facelift is to paint your cabinets. While certain natural wood cabinetry styles were all the rage years ago, some of them have faded out of popularity, and could be bringing your kitchen down. All you need for this renovation is a couple of cans of paint, and a great color! This is a great way to cover up any signs of aging your cabinets might be showing, and make your kitchen look brand new. Right now white kitchens are a popular classic, but anything that goes with your color scheme is up for grabs.

#2 New Window Treatments

Sometimes all it takes to spruce up a room is a few new window treatments. If you’ve been living with cheap vinyl blinds for a while, go ahead and splurge on some wood slatted blinds for an instant upgrade. Additionally you might want to think about some new curtains or valances to update a living room or bedroom.

#3 Slipcover Furniture

If your current furniture is looking faded and worn, but you don’t want to spend too much on brand new items, look into slipcovers. A popular trend these days, slipcovers allow you to choose whatever fabric or new color scheme you’re looking for, without having to spend big bucks on all new pieces.

#4 Hang More Mirrors

If your house is feeling small and dingey, there’s no better way to open it up than by hanging more mirrors. Check out local resale shops and garage sales for affordable pieces that you can repaint, and hang wherever you feel they fit. You don’t have to stick to eye level either. By hanging mirrors higher on the wall, they’re more likely to catch and reflect light, making your home seem brighter.

#5 New Cushions or Pillow Covers

If you have neutral colored furniture and walls, you can very easily change your color scheme with a few bright throw pillows or cushions. Not interested in buying? You can make new covers for your existing pillows and cushions. It’s a super easy process, and you can always find fabric remnants for cheap.

#6 Change Lampshades

Believe it or not, changing your lampshades is a great way to update any room in your home. Lampshades not only affect the style of a room, but they also alter how the light flows throughout the room. So choose different styles and colors, and don’t be afraid to pick something bold!

#7 Hardware

Another simple change that makes a big impact is your hardware. Door handles, cabinet knobs, and drawer pulls are all fairly inexpensive items you can easily upgrade. If you’ve always had standard door knobs, go for a classic glass handle. If your drawer pulls are looking old and weathered, upgrade to stainless steel. By making these little changes, you can do a lot for your overall affect.
